Granger Construction Migrates to Azure

Microsoft Azure Migration

Customer

Granger Construction is a construction company of approximately 300 employees with locations in Michigan and Ohio.

Environment

Granger Construction had an on-premise server environment managed by internal IT staff. This infrastructure included hosting Active Directory, File Servers, Application Servers, and Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) utilizing VMware Horizon.

Challenge

The on-premise server environment was complex and included inherent risks when data was stored in a local data center.

Solution

Granger Construction collaborated with Dewpoint to migrate the data center from on-premises to Azure and the VDI infrastructure to Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD). The team started by architecting and building connectivity between Azure and the Granger Construction data center. Once accomplished, the AVD infrastructure was built, and the team leveraged the Microsoft migration tool Azure Migrate to “Lift and Shift” servers from on-premise to Azure. During the migration, the team also removed legacy on-premise systems, including the local Exchange environment and Active Directory Federation Services (ADFS).

Results

Throughout the project, Granger Construction and Dewpoint worked closely, exchanging ideas and approaches, creating an effective team dynamic that yielded the desired results of a reduced onsite hardware footprint that would allow Granger Construction to reduce future hardware upgrade costs.
